My dad is a US Army veteran who has only recently started addressing the trauma he experienced throughout his life. The photo used for this painting is of a Marine in the Vietnam War with the blank stare of what was once called "shell shock", taken by Don McCullin, in 1968. These Marines were sent home and given next to no care for the mental trauma they experienced overseas and struggled with civilian life for the rest o their lives.
